LaCie Backup Software
I got a chance to try the LaCie 1-Click backup software for the PC. It’s a free download from LaCie and can be found here. It is a very simple application that provides a single hotkey “Ctrl-S” backup of folders that you specify. It doesn’t appear to perform a backup with any sort of schedule. It doesn’t appear to make intelligent backups, it just copies all the files form one location to another when you hit “Ctrl-S” regardless of wether or not the files changed since your last backup. It doesn’t use background processor time to perform it’s task either.
In fact, I couldn’t figure out why I would use it over a batch file “xcopy [source] [destination]” command.
Also, during installation, it sets three different applications to load every time the computer boots. THREE!! First off, the application itself (LaCieBackup.exe), The next two are part of the “Install Shield Update Service” (issch.exe) and (isuspm.exe).
To add insult to injury, the LaCie Backup software is unable to deal with directory paths larger than 260 characters. Now I know that seems like a lot of characters but it’s not. On my first run of the software it came up with three directory path problems.
Kind of annoying. Very annoying actually because it doesn’t give you any way of finding out which file paths were too long.
As I said in an earlier post, the Mac version seems to work just fine. But the PC version? Sure, it works but I couldn’t figure out why someone would spend the time to write this in the first place. Maybe that’s where the money went that they should have used to train their tech support personnel.
